HoLEP is a highly effective, size-independent surgical treatment for benign prostate enlargement. Using a holmium laser passed through the urethra, the entire inner obstructing portion of the prostate is precisely separated from its capsule and removed. HoLEP provides durable symptom relief with a low rate of retreatment, and can be used for prostates of any size.
TREATMENTS
Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)

When Is HoLEP Recommended?
HoLEP is suitable for a wide range of prostate sizes and patient profiles, but is particularly valuable when:
• The prostate is large and may not be suitable for TURP
• Symptoms have recurred after a previous TURP or other procedure
• A durable, size-independent result is the priority, or bleeding risk needs to be minimized
• Patient may not be suitable to simple prostatectomy depending on their health or prostate factors
Risks and Considerations
All procedures carry risks, which your surgeon will discuss with you in detail. These may include:
• Retrograde ejaculation ~ 80%
• Temporary stress leakage of urine — usually settles over weeks to a few months
• Blood in the urine in the early weeks
• A small risk of urethral narrowing
Recovery at a glance: Usually 1–2 nights; the catheter is removed before you leave hospital.
1
Pre-Operative Assessment
Urinary flow studies, bladder ultrasound, and prostate sizing confirm the degree of obstruction and suitability for the procedure.
2
Laser Enucleation
The holmium laser precisely separates the obstructing prostatic tissue from its outer capsule through the urethra. The entire inner gland is delivered into the bladder.
3
Morcellation and Removal
A morcellator divides the enucleated tissue into small fragments, which are removed through the endoscope sheath and sent for pathology.
4
Outcome Monitoring
Most patients experience a marked improvement in urinary flow within days; symptom scores are reviewed at follow-up.
