Pelvi-ureteric junction (PUJ) obstruction is a blockage where the kidney joins the ureter, which can cause pain, infections and stones, and can also reduce kidney function. This can be something you are born with, often due to a crossing blood vessel, or something that develops later in life.
CONDITIONS
PUJ Obstruction

Common Risk Factors
• Prior infections, or scarring following treatment
• Kidney stones or previous stone treatment
• Family history

How We Diagnose PUJ Obstruction
• Blood tests
• Imaging – ultrasound or CT urogram
• Nuclear medicine scan to monitor drainage and each kidney’s individual function

How We Treat PUJ Obstruction
• Monitoring for mild cases. Where imaging is atypical or other risk factors are present, we may arrange additional tests to exclude other causes
• Robotic or laparoscopic pyeloplasty
• Endoscopic laser treatment in selected cases
• Temporary stent or drainage if the kidney is obstructed or infected
