Some patients need a urinary catheter for a short or prolonged period of time. Good catheter care prevents complications and supports comfort and independence.
CONDITIONS
Catheter Management

Types of Catheter
• External device (e.g. Urodome) – collects urine from patients with incontinence while protecting the skin
• Indwelling urethral catheter
• Suprapubic catheter – a catheter that comes out through the lower abdomen
• Intermittent (in-and-out) self-catheterisation

How We Help
• Choosing the right catheter and drainage system
• Teaching intermittent self-catheterisation
• Regular catheter changes and troubleshooting (blockage, leakage or discomfort)
• Preventing and managing catheter-associated infection, treating only when there are symptoms
• Preventing and managing catheter blockages
• Planning trial removal or long-term management, including a suprapubic catheter where appropriate
